The project began in February in the artisan shops at Ilan-Lael with glass craftsman Cindy Mushet-Shriver remaking the window, woodworker Dan Thorner designing the wood frame and blacksmith John Wheelock creating the stabilizing structures. The Powers Family comes with many years of experience and skills to ensure the Hubbell House lives on for generations to come. As our forefathers expanded the nation to the west of the Mississippi more and more wheels rolled from LaCrosse and the other river towns to the virgin lands of the Great Plains.
As the foundation’s new president, Drew Hubbell said it is his priority to lead Ilan-Lael in a direction of financial sustainability. The first structure deemed "The Hubbell House" was built in 1854, four years before Minnesota became a state in 1858, by John Hubbell. It was a two-room log building, and was known by mail carriers and stagecoach travelers as a rest stop along their journeys. In 1856 it was reconstructed into a three-story building made of limestone from the local quarry.
The only exception was in 2020, when the pandemic closed the property to the public. Despite two COVID closures that led to most of the staff being laid off, the Hubbell House eked through the pandemic thanks to loyal customers and staff, plus a robust takeout business. The Pappas family owned the Hubbell House since 1946. They worked around the clock to keep it going by "washing dishes, prepping food, taking orders, running food out to cars," said Joseph.
